How to teach a cat to use a litter box?
Cats are the cleanest pets and at the same time very intelligent creatures with a strong sense of independence. Maybe that is why there is a common belief that a cat cannot be taught anything unless it wants to take the initiative. This is not entirely true. Cat lovers know that of course there are furry creatures who go their own way - also ostentatiously avoiding the litter box, but there are also those who learn to use the litter box in a flash, bury their excrements very carefully, and when leaving their cat toilet, shake their paws with such grace and precision that not even a speck of litter is left on the floor.
Did you know that…
Generation X, born between 1965 and 1980, who grew up during the economic crisis of the 1970s and entered adulthood in the 1990s, were thrilled by the series entitled "Seven Wishes" as children. The story is simple: Darek saves a Cat who is being bullied by boys in a housing estate. When he takes him home, it turns out that the Cat can talk and, on top of that, promises the boy seven wishes. Darek diligently uses the cat's superpower and asks the quadruped, for example, to fulfill all the boy's wishes in response to the scowling looks from adults. The Cat fulfills his savior's subsequent wishes, and the latter, seeing that not every whim is worth fulfilling, begins to approach his wishes more sensibly.
Years later, as successive generations returned to “Seven Wishes” as a cult classic from the times of… their old one (sheesh!), several unpleasant facts related to the production of the series came to light. Among them, the fact that the film crew went with the flow and did not hire a trainer (today, in addition to a trainer with special qualifications, a behaviorist would probably be hired). This approach to working with their beloved quadrupeds arouses understandable opposition from cat lovers. Because cats, as we mentioned, are very intelligent and, if we treat them with respect and empathy, they learn quickly. So don’t ask how many human wishes your cat can fulfill. Ask how many cat wishes you can fulfill!
If your cat could talk, he might give you seven litter box wishes:
- Select a litter box that I will accept.
- Buy litter with a consistency, structure, and scent that I like.
- Take care of the accessories for my litter box.
- Place the litter box in a place I deem appropriate.
- Be patient, whether I am a kitten, an adult cat or a senior cat.
- Clean my cat toilet regularly.
- React quickly when I start relieving myself outside the litter box.
How to choose a cat toilet?
Are you choosing the best fittings for your bathroom? Do you care about its perfect arrangement? Your cat also deserves bathroom luxuries! Choose a litter box that I will accept. Yes, I know that there is a very large selection of litter boxes in stores: open (with a rim preventing the litter from spilling out and without a rim, including corner ones) and closed (with a hinged door), with a sieve and a so-called double bottom, and even in a fully automated version - with a motion sensor, scale and a self-cleaning cycle that can be set to start at a specific time after I leave the litter box. But let's leave these automated wonders for the very end, when I have my physiological functions under control. And remember that the size of the litter box matters: it must be at least one and a half times longer than the Cat (excluding the tail).
A closed litter box can be compared to… a TOY TOY toilet. In both places, the concentration of unpleasant odor can be so unbearable that some cats and some people are unable to relieve themselves there.
It is important to know that in nature, wild cats do not relieve themselves in caves or other secluded places, because they like to see what is happening around them and need to have an open escape route. Therefore, regardless of all the modern litter box inventions, the first choice should always be an open litter box, without any fancy features.
A litter box for a small cat, a litter box for training
First, buy the simplest litter box, open, so you can accompany me in my learning. When I'm older, you can think about a litter box with a swing door, but remember that cats can also be claustrophobic - if I refuse to cooperate, don't get angry. Remember: a small cat - a small litter box with fine gravel. My first litter box can't be too big, because I won't be able to get into it. A low model with a detachable rim will be ideal: if I have trouble getting in, you can remove the rim and somehow I'll manage.
Litter box for a big cat
You already know that you can buy me a litter box with a swing door or an automatic one, but an open litter box is always the best and safest choice. Always keep in mind that I need to be able to enter the litter box freely, stand in it without any problems on a layer of litter a few centimeters thick (these centimeters should be about 7 - again, we're back to my seven wishes...), and also be able to turn around on my own tail and bury... you-know-what.
At Animal Island, we believe that every cat deserves a litter box that is perfectly suited to their needs. Yes, size does matter in this case.
Which Cat Litter to Choose?
Your cat is an individual, so why shouldn't you take its opinion into account when choosing a litter? Buy a litter with a consistency, structure and smell that I like. Some cats like bentonite litter, others prefer silicate (called silicone). There are also those that are only able to relieve themselves when they feel natural pine or straw briquettes under their paws, and connoisseurs with an ecological bent may even prefer corn granulate! There are cats that will only relieve themselves in odorless litter and those that are only attracted to the toilet by the smell of a pine forest. I know that at first you may be irritated: you bought me aromatic lavender bentonite, and I am picky, but believe me, through trial and error we will eventually find the perfect litter.
- Bentonite litter – clumps quickly (although there are also non-clumping litters), has high absorbency, absorbs odors well, but can be dusty and difficult to scrape off the substrate when it dries.
- Zeolite litter (made of a mineral that occurs naturally in the cracks of igneous and volcanic rocks) - perfectly absorbs cat urine and neutralizes unpleasant odors, has antibacterial properties, prevents the spread of microorganisms and protects the litter box from unwanted mold, is dust-free and does not stick to cat fur, so it is especially recommended for sensitive cats and those with allergies.
- Silicate (silicone) litter - perfectly absorbs the intense smell of cat urine, which is bound inside the granules; it is not dusty, but is quite hard and makes a characteristic sound under the paws, which can irritate the cat.
- Wood/straw briquettes – biodegradable, very absorbent, dust-free, perfectly eliminates the smell of ammonia; may or may not clump; suitable for flushing down the toilet, although this must be done in small batches because it can clog the pipes. If your cat prefers wood litter, buy it in large packages, but instead of shopping in a pet store, go to… a DIY store and look for a bag marked wood pellets. It's exactly the same thing, but the price will be much lower!
- Corn granulate – does not stick to the animal’s paws and fur so easily and the cat does not take it outside the litter box, absorbs odour perfectly and is gentle on the paws.
Don't be upset if it takes you a long time to find the right litter. At Animal Island, we know that satisfying your cat's toilet needs often requires a lot of patience, but isn't it true that those who love cats want to provide them with the best possible conditions in such intimate situations?
Remember : any used litter (mineral, silicone or plant) should be disposed of in the mixed waste bin!
Cat litter box accessories
Opt for accessories that make it easier to use the litter box. Your cat will appreciate the intelligence of the cleaning service.
Next time you buy a bag of litter, grab a litter mat from the store shelf so I can shake off my paws when I leave, because nothing frustrates a cat like bits of litter between his toes. Also get a litter scoop – I recommend one with a non-slip, closed stand – and a supply of carbon filters. It’s a good idea to buy special litter bags to line the bottom of the litter box. When you have to replace all the litter, cleaning goes much faster.
Where should the litter box be placed?
Put the litter box in a place I deem appropriate. If I have already peed or “something else” in the same place several times, but not in the litter box, take that as a hint from me: just move my toilet there.
Remember also that cats do not tolerate the immediate vicinity of a litter box and bowls of food or water. Wild Cats know perfectly well that the smell of excrement attracts predators and therefore they relieve themselves in a different place and eat in a different place - safe for them. We, domestic cats, behave exactly the same as our wild brethren. The toilet and the dining room are two separate worlds - for you too, right?
Some cats only feel safe when they have several litter boxes at their disposal. If you notice that one litter box is not enough for me, respect my needs. Cat experts believe that the litter box should be placed at least 30 cm from the wall, so that the cat can freely walk around it and choose its own way to get there. When deciding to place the litter box in a specific room (bathroom, drying room, hallway), we must take into account factors that may bother the cat, e.g. a strong smell of detergents, too much traffic, noise from the washing machine, lack of lighting or an escape route.
How to teach a little cat to use a litter box?
Be patient, especially if I'm a kitten or a senior cat. If I'm tiny, put me in the litter box every now and then, wait for me to look around, dig the litter with my paw. You can also shovel some of the litter yourself - my mom would use her paw for this purpose, and it's possible that your behavior will remind me of what my mom showed me. If she didn't have a chance to teach me how to clean, you've just interested me in the topic of toileting. Just don't stand over me and wait for me to... you know... Cats, like people, prefer privacy when doing their physiological needs.
Behaviorists suggest that when training kittens a little over three weeks old to use litter boxes, it is a good idea to mix some litter from their mother's litter box with fresh litter from their own. This makes it much easier for the little ones to start toileting and gives them a sense of security.
How to teach an adult cat to use a litter box?
If I am an adult Cat, you can treat me similarly to Kitty, but instead of shoveling litter, just wait and when I have done my business, reward me with a treat. But remember: do this only after I have left the litter box! Otherwise, I will get confused, and I remind you that the toilet and the dining room are two separate worlds.
If I am a senior cat, bear in mind that sometimes I may not make it to the litter box. It would be nice of you if you could place another one - a spare one - halfway to my proper litter box. I will feel more confident and I will have fewer accidents. This is also a good solution for cats who live in large houses and have to cover long distances. A litter box on the ground floor and upstairs should be the standard. Cats can move at the speed of light, but why confuse them if something goes wrong... If I sometimes do my business outside the litter box, you can collect my feces and put them in the litter box. Never punish me for accidents!
Oh, and one more thing. It's possible that the problem with my reluctance to use the litter box is simply that it's dirty, or - as I've mentioned to you several times - it has too many quirks, is closed, claustrophobic, and simply feels like someone is blocking my escape route.
Imagine being forced to use a toilet that smells bad, has no toilet paper, the toilet bowl and seat look like those on a long-distance train during the holiday season, and on top of that the door is stuck, blocking your chance to get out. Would you use it? Me neither.
Two Cats, One Litter Box – Is It Possible?
If I came to your house with my siblings or a friendly cat, it is possible that we will share a litter box without arguing. However, it often happens that even the most well-behaved cats cannot agree on this one issue: the litter box. Behaviorists say that when you have the same number of litter boxes as cats, plus one extra, the situation is under control.
You have successfully trained your cat to use the litter box! The first cats are behind fences, now everything will go smoothly. However, if sometimes the cat strays from the path and relieves itself outside the litter box, do not get angry at him - look for the cause. At Animal Island, we know that Cats can perfectly hide the symptoms of illness, and without us they simply will not cope with pain or discomfort.
How to care for a litter box
Take care of your furry friend's litter box just as you would your own toilet. Your cat will certainly appreciate it.
Regularly clean my cat litter. Clumping litter was invented for the purpose of removing clumps from under my feet every day, and if you still forget, let's get back to talking about the self-cleaning automatic litter box. If you have no memory problems, throw out all the litter and clean the litter box with a mild disinfectant every week.
If I have already mastered the toileting issue and suddenly start to relieve myself outside the litter box, react immediately. Because if I already know how to use the litter box and start peeing in places that are not intended for this, e.g. on the couch or in your bed, it may be a sign that I have bladder or kidney problems. Urinary tract infection, interstitial cystitis and cystitis can cause pain during urination and discourage me from using the litter box, because then I associate the litter box with pain. If this association is established, then behavioral problems are ready, and we want to avoid that, right? Oh, and at the right time, make sure to castrate or sterilize me (I won't explain to you that this is important now, but you know yourself), because otherwise I will be marking my territory.
Did you know that…
Is there a diagnostic litter? When exposed to cat urine, it changes color depending on its pH. When the color indicating a high pH persists for too long, do not delay a visit to the vet. The pH of cat urine is quite narrow and should be around 6-6.5.
Neutralizing litter box odor
At the bottom, under the new batch of litter, you can pour some baking soda, which is great at absorbing unpleasant odors. Also, don't neglect to replace the carbon filter, if my litter box has one. And if, despite everything, the smells from the cat litter box are unbearable for you, you can use anti-odor candles, which you can place in strategic places in the apartment.
In our offer you will find Animal Island Odor Neutralizing Candles – effectively neutralizing all intense odors of our Pets, including those from the litter box. 100% safe for Four-legged friends – Dogs and Cats! Created to refresh the scent in your homes – because we know how important details are in everyday life!?
And so we have come to the end of our toilet effusions.
Google the song from the movie you read about at the beginning. There's a snippet:
“Seven wishes will come true
Like the magic seven numbers
You can't escape even if you wanted to
Before the choice"
Before choosing a litter box, of course :)
